Background
Most of the Kachhi language group lives in the western part of India in the state of Gujarat (Katch). The old name for this people group was Vaga Riya but they have changed their name to Kachhi Gujarati. They also were originally known as Kachhi Koli but have dropped the association with Koli.
Because the Kachhi Gujarati people of India and Pakistan are now separated by a political border, their languages have changed and become different dialects.
Location
The Kachhi people live in the irrigated area of the province of Sindh. The center for this group is the town of Tando Allahyar and from there they have spread west towards the city of Hyderabad and east up to the border of the Thar Desert area.
Kachhi Christians
There are an estimated 45,000 Christians among the Kachhi people. This represents around 3% of the population.
When and how was Christianity first introduced?
Christianity was introduced in the Kachhi community in 1951 by the Presbyterian Church and by 1953 there were 200 baptized believers.
